How It Works

TotalStat fluid coating systems, or oilers, operate by receiving fluid from the reservoir assembly into a pump. The oiler sprays fluid from an electrostatic nozzle onto a grounded surface at a rate or volume determined by the pump speed. The applied fluid coverage (mg/ft2) is determined by the combination of the pump speed (cc/min), spray width (in) and line speed (ft/min). The operator selects the oil flow rate (cc/min).

Conversion from flow rate to coverage

Coverage (mg/ft2) = flow (cc/min) x 10,800 / (speed (ft/min) x width (in)) where the constant 10,800 = (900mg/1cc) x (12 in/1 ft)

As fluid is pushed through an electrostatic nozzle, high voltage is applied to a shim inside the nozzle, which then charges the fluid molecules. This voltage forces these molecules to become ionized or charged to the same polarity and potential. This charge causes the molecules to repel each other as they travel out of the nozzle. The charged fluid spray then seeks a neutral state or grounded surface passing near the nozzle.

Inductor bars are long metal rods positioned on both sizes of the nozzle. These bars are connected to ground through special resistors (20 gigaohm) that create a partial ground for the charged oil droplets. Careful placement of the bars at the nozzle outlet ensures that droplets are steered toward the target surface, and are induced to spread apart from each other—creating a uniform mist that coats the intended surface.
